Over the last week or two I have been lulled into a false sense of security. The sun has shone brightly, the daffodils and other spring flowers poked their pretty little heads out of the warmer ground and skies were often blue....summer was on it's way.
As further proof, yesterday on my way into work, as I picked up a few essentials at the supermarket I noticed the first strawberries on sale and despite a rather extreme price made haste to the checkout clutching my summer fare. Strawberries mean summer right? Wrong!
By the time I got home in the evening the temperature here had plummeted to barely above zero and a strong wind was blowing all and sundry around. So strong in fact that trying to navigate my way on foot from my car to the front door proved to be so much of a challenge that at one point I quite literally couldn't move forward against it! The spring plants on my balcony where flattened, pots where rolling around on their sides depositing their contents underfoot and limbs of small trees where no longer attached.
The night was no improvement, the roof rattled constantly, the temperature dropped further and the wind howled unhaltingly around the building. Ditto, displeased, was not for venturing out and instead 'danced' loudly around the flat, expending copious amounts of energy, all night long.
This morning....can you believe it....it is snowing!! This is not snow of massive proportions, we are in no danger of becoming blocked in but none the less, this is April, this is spring is it not?....and we have snow?? Ok, so I love snow, waited all winter for snow but in April? It is not unheard of granted but just two days ago it was positively summery, very peculiar!

One almost feels sorry
Good grief! The nuptials between Prince Charles and that woman, are sliding with impressive velocity further and further toward what must be the greatest organisational fiasco of recent times.
One could almost, please note I only say almost here, feel sorry for the guy, he has waited over 30 years for this day to become possible and as it approaches it becomes more and more of a disaster. He has a mother who considers her son's happiness well behind that of her duty, a father who doesn't warrant a mention and lackeys and advisors who seem incapable of of organising a child's birthday party and McDonald's, let alone an event that, in theory at least, will be seen throughout the world. This is of course only theoretical given that the television viewing figures in reality may, if he is lucky, hit three! One wonders if the change of date is less to do with respect for the Pope than it has to do with forcing the viewing public figures closer to five. This questionable coupling is just not going to be the attraction of one I recall in the early 80's.
Almost daily there is another embarrassment or disaster, the most recent is nothing less than intruders gaining entry to Windsor Castle, not but a few days from the, er.... happy event! Presumably 'heads will roll' somewhere within the security staff but don't count on it, let's face it, this is hardly a first is it?
Forgive me my cynicism and more so, forgive the bitch in me rearing it's ugly head but one is tempted to utter quietly here the phrase 'what comes round goes round'. I can't help but feel that this fool, who will one dayGod help us be King, is responsible at least in part, for making one lady's life a misery. Sure, he had his duties, his mother to contend with and protocols to adhere too but is the guy completely spineless, did anyone actually put a loaded gun to his head and make him marry Diana and if they did, did they also dictate he behaved in the fashion he did 'post marriage'.
I know, I know, 'people in glass houses' and all of that but come on Charlie boy, get a grip eh and sort it out....sorry, but right now the mere thought of a 'King Charles' and of this debacle is so utterly appalling it is nothing short of laughable.

A special thank you
When Karine so sadly died and a few of we bloggers decided we had to do something in her memory, little did we realise then, the logistical difficuties of collecting donations from accross the world and of dealing with institutions in Norway, where there the language presented us with some very trying moments.
The last week has tested our powers of organisation and problem solving somewhat, emails from the U.K. to California and back again were many, so many in fact, that my anti- spam software began treating the recipient of these mails as a spammer!
Through all of this I owe one lady a very special and heartfelt 'thankyou'. Charmaine, the lady on the other end of these mails, despite her own great sadness at the loss of her dear friend, remained a tower of strength, she tirelessley sought out much of the information we required, dealt with translations, retained a sense of humour to lighten a tragic situation and was unfailing support.
So, Charmaine, from me to you, a massive ~ THANK YOU ~
....... we did it girl and it was worth every sleepless night and stress filled email. I couldn't have done it without you and to have formed a freindship along the way is a blessing indeed.

'Congress'
Following on in a similar vein from my post of a few days ago regarding 'getting old', this little treat:
This is an actual extract from a sex education school text book for girls, printed in the early 60's in the U.K.....and written by a woman!
Yeah right! I am, for once, at a loss for words, this cannot be real! .....and remember girls, only small moans are permitted, no hair rollers and you must allow 'congress'....... what sort of word is that to use? Congress indeed, fer pity's sake! heh.
Oh, and guys....don't even think it! :o)
Thanks to Justitia for making this available.

"When retiring to the bedroom, prepare yourself a promptly as possible. Whilst feminine hygiene is of the utmost importance, your tired husband does not want to queue for the bathroom, as he would have to do for his train. But remember to look your best when going to bed.
Try to achieve a look that is welcoming without being obvious. If you need to apply face-cream or hair rollers wait until he is asleep as this can be shocking to a man last thing at night.
When it comes to the possibility of intimate relations with your husband it is important to remember your marriage vows and inparticular your commitment to obey them. if he feels he needs to sleep immediately then so be it. In all things be led by your husbands wishes. Do not pressure him in any way to stimulate intimacy. Should your husband suggest congress then agree humbly all the while being mindful that a mans satisfaction is more important than a woman's. When he reaches his moment of fulfillment a small moan from yourself is encouraging to him and quite sufficient to indicate any enjoyment that you may have had
Should your husband suggest any of the more unusual practices, be obedient and uncomplaining but register any reluctance by remaining silent. It is likely that your husband will then fall promptly asleep so adjust your clothing, freshen up and apply your night time face and hair products. You may then set the alarm so that you can arise shortly before him in the morning. This will enable you to have his morning cup of tea ready when he awakes."

A rare sight
Both cats in close proximity, though apparently not looking overly comfortable with the situation!
As a rule, Ditto sees Poppy as a 'playmate' to be stalked and pounced upon, while Poppy sees Ditto as a rather over zealous pain in the butt!
EDIT: Ditto left, Poppy right as viewed.

Video me not!
Not that I wish to be negative where technological advance is concerned but Google's decision to trial video blogging is a little worrying on two fronts.
Those of us who use this service, and yes I know it's free and perhaps we shouldn't complain too loudly, are well aware of it's shortcomings and the resulting frustrations. By allowing upload of video I can only see that the servers will struggle further, lets face it, even without the added weight of what are generally large files Google's servers already strugglefrequently from time to time so heaven knows what our waiting and reload times will be once they also have to deal with video!
This may be an unpopular opinion but I for one would prefer to have the option of paying for an upgraded Blogger account that works with more ease.
That aside it seems slightly sad that even blogging might reduced to another form of TV, is blogging not in large part about writing? Let's hope that video clips will be occasional items in a blog and not, that in times to come, we will see hordes of people sitting infront of poorly focused digicams or webcams, droning on day after day!

Goodbye Karine
Today, at 12.30pm, Karine's funeral will take place in Oslo.
On behalf of we who knew her a single rose has been sent, her husband requested donations to cancer research instead of flowers and a donation has been made. Thank you again to those who participated. Between 'December Moms', a group Karine belonged too and a few of us here, over $500 was raised in her memory!
I have said it before but I will say it again....Karine was a truly amazing and inspirational lady and I won't ever forget her. In life she taught me much and even in death I am still learning from her. Those of us who were privileged enough to get to know her, even a little, will miss her greatly.
Please, take a moment to remember Karine and to think of her grieving family today as they say their final goodbye to a very special and brave wife, mother and friend.

Foot firmly in mouth
I have an inane ability on occasion to wangle my small foot into my mouth and speak without engaging any part of my I.Q first!
Yesterday on my arrival home from work, tired, grubby and not in the best of humour I plonked myself down infront of the pc, coffee and cigarette in hand, to check my mail before I set about any chores that needed attending too.
Immediately 'Ms Tidy desk' here was struck by the fact that things were not quite as normal, barely imperceptible things but none the less something was not right, my desk had been moved, it's contents were not in quite the same places as when I left, hmmmmm, thought I , so what's gone on here? PG has been up to something, my first thought, horror in attendance, was that something had broken and he had dragged everything out to fix it.
And then I noticed a small wire, stuck with blue tack (how did we live without that stuff)to the side of the desk, hidden, well in theory, behind a letter tray. On further investigation it turned out to be a power lead....but what for I wondered, I know this little patch better than my own face, we have nothing with a lead like that.
Here is where my foot entered my mouth. I called PG to discover the reasoning behind a power lead, that leads to nothing.
"Bloody hell woman", "can you leave nothing alone, do you have to notice everything" was his response!
It transpires I have ruined his surprise and now I feel horribly guilty. I have moaned of late that backing everything up on here is such a pain in the rear, I have an almost pathological fear of losing all my data, my whole life is contained in this machine, a lifetime's photographs, all my banking, every important document, many things of sentimental value, copies of every letter written and received, blah, blah, blah. PG has a habit on occasion of crashing windows whilst he is 'fiddling', once before I lost everything, never again! Instead I now spend hours burning gig after gig after gig after gig on to DVD most weeks, a task that I hate. The software is never quite up to the job and even this reasonably powerful machine struggles on occasion to allow me to do anything else while it performs this hateful, boring task!
So what had I ruined? PG, for my impending birthday had bought me an external hard drive carrier and hard drive, not for me flowers, perfume or jewellery, you can keep em, give me gadgetry any day. He had spent his morning alone getting it rigged up and making sure it all worked as it should. God love him. Access to the rear of this pc is a nightmare, so rather than take all the leads out again he had 'hidden' them. Well, he figured, "it's only for a few days, she won't notice them!" Wrong!
So I spoilt his surprise and now I feel mean, but my having done so, he saw little point in keeping said gift hidden away until the nominated day. On his return from work at almost midnight I got the 'close your eyes and hold your hands out' treatment.......an early birthday present! This thing is awesome, a sleek silver contraption, it's own onboard cooling fan and a pleasingly large capacity for storage at just one mouse click and 'yayyy'...... no more damnable DVD burning!!!!
This guy knows exactly which buttons to press....PG you're a star!

I need to sleep
Here I am again, it's almost 1.00am, my body aches, my eyes are on stalks, my ability to focus on the monitor is diminishing rapidly, my whole body is shouting 'go to sleep' and what am I doing....surfing the blogosphere!
I am not 18 anymore, by anyone's stretch of the imagination. I will doubtless suffer for this in the morning, as ever I seem too lately..... but still I remain, rooted to the spot.
The trouble is that having worked all day, arrived home, done the necessary chores etc. etc. it seems kinda like a waste of my life to just go to sleep now....I want some play time! No, I have to sleep, ok well maybe just another 10 minutes.....half an hour....an hour perhaps.........

Getting old
A friend landed this in my inbox recently with an addendum of 'how true!'
'How true' indeed....I just had to blog it.
According to today's regulators and bureaucrats, those of us who were kids in the 60's, 70's and early 80's probably shouldn't have survived, because our baby cots were covered with brightly coloured lead-based paint which was promptly chewed and licked. We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, or latches on doors or cabinets and it was fine to play with pans.
When we rode our bikes, we wore no helmets, just
flip-flops and fluorescent 'spokey dokey's' on our wheels. As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or airbags - riding in the passenger seat was a treat.
We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle and it tasted the same.
We ate chips, bread and butter pudding and drank fizzy juice with sugar in it, but we were never overweight because we were always outside playing.
We shared one drink with four friends, from one bottle or can and no-one actually died from this.
We would spend hours building go-carts out of scraps and then went top speed down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes.
After running into stinging nettles a few times, we learned to solve the problem.
We would leave home in the morning and could play all day, as long as we were back before it got dark. No one was able to reach us and no one minded.
We did not have Play stations or X-Boxes, no video games at all. No 99 channels on TV, no videotape movies, no surround sound, no mobile phones, no personal computers, no DVDs, no Internet chat rooms.
We had friends - we went outside and found them.
We played elastics and rounders, and sometimes that ball really hurt!
We fell out of trees, got cut, and broke bones but there were no law suits.
We had full on fist fights but no prosecution followed from other parents.
We played chap-the-door-run-away and were actually afraid of the owners catching us.
We walked to friends' homes.
We also, believe it or not, WALKED to school; we
didn't rely on mummy or daddy to drive us to school, which was just around the corner.
We made up games with sticks and tennis balls.
We rode bikes in packs of 7 and wore our coats by only the hood.
The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke a law was unheard of...They actually sided with the law.
This generation has produced some of the best
risk-takers and problem solvers and inventors, ever. The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.
And you're one of them. Congratulations!
Pass this on to others who have had the luck to grow as real kids, before lawyers and government regulated our lives, for our own good.
For those of you who aren't old enough, thought you might like to read about us.
This my friends, is surprisingly frightening......and it might put a smile on your face:
The majority of students in universities today were born in 1986........They are called youth.
They have never heard of We are the World, We are the children, and the Uptown Girl they know is by Westlife not BillyJoel.
They have never heard of Rick Astley, Bananarama, Nena Cherry or Belinda Carlisle
For them, there has always been only one Germany and one Vietnam.
AIDS has existed since they were born. CD's have
existed since they were born.
Michael Jackson has always been white.
To them John Travolta has always been round in shape and they can't imagine how this fat guy could be a god of dance.
They believe that Charlie's Angels and Mission
Impossible are films from last year.
They can never imagine life before computers.
They'll never have pretended to be the A Team, RedHand Gang or the Famous Five.
They'll never have applied to be on Jim'll Fix It or Why Don't You.
They can't believe a black and white television ever existed. And they will never understand how we could leave the house without a mobile phone.
Now let's check if we're getting old...
1. You understand what was written above and you
smile.
2. You need to sleep more, usually until the
afternoon, after a night out.
3. Your friends are getting married/already married.
4. You are always surprised to see small children playing comfortably with computers.
5. When you see teenagers with mobile phones, you shake your head.
6. You remember watching Dirty Den in EastEnders the first time around.
7. You meet your friends from time to time, talking about the good Old days, repeating again all the funny things you have
experienced together.
8. Having read this , you are thinking of
showing it to some other friends because you think they will like it too...
Yes, you're getting old!!

Commentathon ~ last chance
Greg Hammond lost his wife and his children's mother to breast cancer a year ago today. He is holding a commentathon on their blog today to raise money to fight this disease, which will affect the lives of one in twelve women at some point in their lives.
If you haven't done so already please pop over HERE to 'California Hammonds' and leave a comment. It won't cost you a penny but each comment received on today's date will raise money for breast cancer research.... so go on...do it NOW, time is running out.

Friday's feast (41)
Appetizer - Describe your week in one word.
Crap!
Soup - Tell about a funny practical joke that you've played on someone (or that was played on you!).
The words 'practical joke' and 'funny' don't rest easy in one sentence for me so I haven't played one and I don't recall one being played on me. They usually seem to result in 'a laugh' at someone else's expense. Sorry, is that boring?
Salad - Name someone you had a crush on when you were a kid.
Fantasy land ~ David Cassidy, yes really, sorry! Real world ~ a guy called Robert, he took me on a date at age 14, my world was complete..... and then broke my heart by taking my friend out almost immediately after! Hey, I was 14, we were star crossed lovers, marriage any day, the full bit! heh. I carried a torch for that guy for years and should he read this (God forbid) he would know who he is!
Main Course - If you were a member of royalty, what would your title be?
Er....Her royal highness??
Dessert - What colors are the clothes you are wearing today?
Grey and cream
