My most embarrassing incident ever!

There are some things that perhaps for our own dignity we should never share but also, as one rarely able to resist a challenge we have to break that rule, or I do at least!

The challenge in this case comes from a competition launched by Urbanvox, to blog 'your most embarrassing incident ever'. I don't embarrass easily so stories in this vein are few and far between but there is one which instantly comes to mind, which perhaps not for the reasons one might imagine, managed to have me curling up inside and wishing the ground would open up beneath me very quickly...so here goes, I will do my very best to word this appropriately but be warned, it's content is adult in nature and maybe not for the faint of heart.

Embarrassing incident - Part 1.

It began as what should have been, and for the most part was, a very pleasant evening, the specifics of when, where and who I won't share to protect the innocent but the scenario was an evening with a very nice man, pretty early on in the relationship, early enough that what followed was far from ideal!

So, for the incident to begin let's just say that late on in the evening things became a little 'heated' and the physical aspect of this date became shall we say fulfilled. It was at this point, after it was too late, that I suddenly remembered with some degree of horror, that I was er....wearing internal feminine protection! No, before you ask, neither of us noticed, I don't know why or how but we didn't, but oh how I wish that we had!

I made light of the situation (as you do) and in the wee small hours went home to what I can only describe as a fraught hour or two of 'fishing and ferreting' in vain and desperately more frantic attempts to retrieve the offending item. It was a complete 'fail'. I trawled the internet for information on my problem and I tried all the recommended tricks but still to no avail, I couldn't even locate it the damn thing!

Now I know enough about physiology to know it couldn't get 'lost' but the (albeit rare) possibility of TSS had to be considered, so eventually I fell into bed and decided I would address the whole debacle again when I woke up.

Embarrassing incident - Part 2.

Sunday morning dawned and I decided I had no option but to attend my local A&E department...who found the entire story highly amusing and thanked me for brightening their Sunday morning! Thanks guys, I'm glad to be of service! My situation of course is not too unusual in A&E circles but the specifics of my physiological case (don't read too much into that, I have a tilted womb, for the ladies who have one you know the issues, ok, TMI maybe) meant that what should have been a simple procedure became almost an hour of the 'legs in stirrups thing', while various doctors peered and poked with various versions of forcept! This was not a fun experience but finally the job was done and I shuffled off home feeling a little battle scarred.

The finale.

Now, all that might be pretty embarrassing for many but like I said, I'm not easily given to embarrassment so thus far in this tale I had mostly seen the funny, if slight panic stricken side, the final part however was the really dire bit.

I arrived home to be met by my concerned parents. I had already managed to explain reasonably discreetly to my mother why I was making a quick dash to A&E but had spared my father the information, he was never good at that stuff but on my arrival he insisted on being told 'what was up'! Jeez.

My mother and myself tried as best we could to find a way to tell him I was fine and he didn't need to know more detail but he just wasn't having it..... and believe me when I say, being reduced to standing in front of one's father, who was himself mortally uncomfortable talking about such things, trying to explain the specifics of my previous 18 hours, has to be the most embarrassing incident of my life! By comparison the rest was a walk in the park!!!

Ask me anything!

Ok, so this is something that if you 'Facebook' you have probably seen around the last few days but I thought I would modify it some and blog it as a meme. I won't tag anyone in the usual meme manner but if you ask a question, whilst it's not obligatory, I dare you to put this on your blog.

So here goes....
I'LL BE TRUTHFUL FOR 24 HOURS ..... YOU CAN ASK ME ANY ONE QUESTION NO MATTER WHAT IT IS. I WILL ANSWER IN FULL HONESTY THOUGH I RESERVE THE RIGHT TO ANSWER PRIVATELY IN EMAIL IF I DEEM IT NECESSARY!

QUESTIONS CAN BE ASKED IN COMMENTS OR BY MAIL (there is a mailto link at the top of the sidebar).

Randomness

I've been tagged by Bulldog to do the 'six random things about me' meme, somewhere in the depths of my archives there is probably something similar somewhere but I'll try and come up with six things that hopefully I haven't before. Here goes....

The rules:

1. Link to the person who tagged you.
2. Post the rules on your blog.
3. Write six random things about yourself.
4. Tag six people at the end of your post and link to them.
5. Let each person know they’ve been tagged and leave a comment on their blog.
6. Let the tagger know when your entry is up.

My six:

1. I was vegetarian for over 40 years....until I met Fletch, who gradually tempted me with that which is the downfall of many a veggie, the bacon buttie! I still prefer not to eat any meat but I do admit now to a 'slip' once in a while.

2. It's a wonder to me sometimes I am here to tell the tale, I have been caught up in not one but two IRA bombs, an armed bank robbery and been rather too close to Harold Shipman for comfort!

3. I have an appendectomy scar that is way bigger than it should be because as a gymnast, when I presented with abdominal pains at age 11 the medical profession assumed I had 'pulled a muscle'.... until the appendix burst and peritonitis made it a whole lot more urgent.

4. I detest all forms of discrimination, probably because I have been on the receiving end of it for years, one day I might elaborate on the reasons why.

5. When I divorced my second husband he begged me not to take the house from him telling me he couldn't cope with losing both me and his home, so out of guilt/care/whatever and against my lawyers advice I trusted him and didn't........ the day the divorce became final he sold it making £130k clear profit and walking away with every penny and possession! *Lesson.....never trust anyone during divorce proceedings, however much you think you can!*

6. Years ago when trying to effect an arrest on a shoplifter (it was my job) I ended up lying on the floor struggling to hang on to him and taking the rough end of his boot....not one single member of the public came to my assistance, instead they stood and watched! Yayyyy for the quick response of the police.

Right then that's my six....now I get to tag six of you! Yes, I know we all have a love/hate relationship with being tagged but them's the rules! ;o)

Daffy, The Pink Jellybaby, Fabulous, Steps from the edge, Miss Smidge, Butterflyshoes.

I got an award!

I have very kindly been given a 'sisterhood' award by Wise Herb, I might could question her choice in me but just the same I feel kind of flattered so thankyou Mrs Herb :o)

It goes like this, I now have to choose eight lady bloggers, sorry guys, I didn't make the rules, who's blogs show great Attitude and/or Gratitude to pass this award on to so here goes, the following are hereby duly awarded:

Lisa - because she's my best friend and her attitude to life has got the pair of us through many a 'scrape'....and likely, given how we seem to live our lives, will go on doing so for a long time yet!

Fabulous - for making me think, for her insightfulness, her honesty....and her cakes!

H.L.- for great tenacity and attitude in the face of tough times.

Daffy - for having the right attitude to life and despite our friendship being in relative infancy, being one of those 'sisters' who already makes a difference to my life.

Alright tit - a relatively new blog to me but one who's author has the most astounding approach/attitude to life and what it throws at her, refreshingly 'pulls no punches' and retains a fab sense of humour despite her trials.

That's the way life is - because Joanna is one of life's truly special people.

Daisy the curly cat - because she has great cattitude and brightens my every day!

....and finally, I'm going to break the rules here because it's my blog and because the recipient of my final award goes to a man who is without doubt secure enough in himself to be called a 'sister' and not be phased by it! I just can't hand out awards for attitude/gratitude without including him!

JW of Welcome to my world, long time friend, supporter of me in my good and bad times, a very clever guy with a knack for kicking my arse when I need it and for knowing 'where I'm at'. An intellectual who confounds and confuses me at times but who makes me think, never deserts me and can always be relied upon whatever is going on in his own life. This guy is family to me and I can't exclude him purely for his gender, so shoot me! ;o)

*Incidentally, I won't beat any of you over the head if you prefer not to pass it on!

The JW interview

Following on from the 'interview meme' of a few days back my good friend and blog-buddy JW decided to invent a new one....this one has twelve questions but you only have to answer those you want to. For more details go here, you don't even have to have a blog to join in.

So....verbose as ever, I'll try and do all twelve, here goes!

1. If you could change one piece of legislation, national or inter-national, what would it be and why? Would you just kill it or amend it?

Can I say the 'no smoking' legislation or is that too shallow?

Ok, more seriously, politics and law aren't my forte so I can't come up with one specific piece of legislation but any legislation that is forcing us into a namby-pamby nanny state instead of individuals with responsibility for ourselves should be revoked in my opinion.

Oh....and those bloody speed cameras! They can go.

2. If able to remove all mention of one individual from all media, who would it be and why? I have already done Simon Cowell, Bruce Forsyth and Michael Winner.

David Miliband, why? Because his ineffectual excuse making and ability never to answer the question have the ability to anger me almost before he opens his mouth these days.

3. What has been your most memorable meal and why? Was it the food, the company, the occasion celebrated or – what?

The meal Fletch and I had at a Chinese restaurant the night before we flew to Andalucia (see answer to question 10)...why? I was soooooo excited and I got to fulfil a small dream I had held for a long time.

4. You may go on vacation to anywhere you choose. Where, why and with whom?

Easy. Fletch and I had a two year round the world motorbike trip planned down to the last detail a year or two back. 55000 miles beginning in Dover, ending in North America and going via all but one continent en-route - ex-China, who wouldn't allow our bike in unaccompanied. It was almost fully financed and completely scheduled but circumstances conspired against us and the project was forced onto the shelf indefinitely. So...if I could go anywhere, I would go everywhere, we still have all the plans, the routes, the legalities in hand, it's ready to roll if you're providing the finance and the time out.

5. Ignorance of the law is no excuse. Do you believe that? If so, why do we have appeal courts?

Correct, ignorance of the law is no excuse, though of course there maybe in very occasional situations some extenuating circumstances.

6. Boy friends or dogs – which are the most loyal and loving?

Can I add 'Cats' here??

No brainer....dogs! But cats even more so....that said, boyfriends are pretty cool too! ;o)

7. If doing good resulted in personal danger or inconvenience, would you still try?

Yes, where the outcome for me was purely inconvenience of course, however if I was putting myself in real danger I would attempt to weigh up the odds before making the decision to help, though under extreme circumstances my adrenaline kicks in and I tend to act/react and think of the possible consequences later.

8. Who had the most influence on you during your growing up period? Mother, father or A.N. Other. Why?

I'm not sure I can choose one person, both my mother and father had a huge influence in shaping who I am now, each of them gave me different strengths. My mother instilled in me what I hope is some understanding of people and emotional issues along with a quiet strength, which whilst I might not always display it is an excellent 'model' to follow and from my father I got my cussedness, determination and sense of 'fair play'.

9. What will you do tomorrow that you would not have done this time last week?

Nothing! By that I mean I will do nothing I don't want to or have to....the last few weeks have been hectic/stressful, tomorrow is for chilling! Despite not working, weekdays I still have a 'work day' mentality, there is still stuff I have to do, chores, look for a job etc. etc. Saturdays I try to allow myself not to think of any of that, usually it doesn't work but tomorrow it will! ;o)

10. In your life to date, which were the best of times? Why?

My early childhood, why, because I felt completely safe and secure and life seemed simple. Yes, I can remember back to about age 1!

Latterly the first holiday Fletch and I took together, a week in a very posh villa in the hills of Andalucia. We hadn't known each other very long and it was like every girls romantic fantasy but for real. Walks on the beach hand in hand, long nights under the stars, days out exploring the Moorish architecture and Andalucian mountains, the heat, the sun, skinny dipping, fantastic food and fantastic company!
(My apologies, can I offer you a sick bag?)

11. Burial, cremation, leave body to science?

Cremation, though if those I left behind felt strongly that they would prefer another way I would be happy for them to make that choice.

12. What on earth made you buy THAT dress/pair of trousers?

A moment of madness and probably the momentary belief that I would actually have the courage to wear it in public!

Your turn now!

Interview me!

I did this a few years back but I thought another go might be fun. This version comes via Mr Nighttime and it works like this;

If you want to be 'interviewed on your blog' drop me a mail or a comment and I will mail you five questions, you answer them in a blog post and send me the link. I think originally the rules said to mail the originator the reply as well as post it but just a link seems simpler.

Here's my interview, as supplied by MrN.

1. Which movie/television show best describes your life and why?

'Forrest Gump' for this quote alone; "Life is like a box of chocolates....you never know whay you're going to get"

2. A former friend that badly hurt you in past, now calls you up and asks for your help with a serious matter, one of life or death. Do you help them?

Yes, no question. To be honest I'm not sure if that's because I would feel guilty if I didn't or because I would actually care about the outcome for the individual but either way, yes.

3. Vacation - Paris or New York City?

No brainer - NYC, my #1 destination since about age six!

4. What is your favorite curse word? (okay, I stole this from "Inside The Actor's Studio.)

Um....'f*ck', sorry but it can be said with real feeling. If I'm in the company of anyone I might offend then 'bugger' would be my second choice.

5. If there is one moment in your life that changed your outlook on the world forever, what would it be?

I'm not sure I can come up with just one, there have been a few instances that changed my outlook on life significantly for differing reasons so I'm going with three;

a. Meeting Fletch....who taught me to look at life differently and made the previously impossible seem possible.

b. Losing my career through long term health issues.....not to be recommended.

c. Having to give Tilly away.....which taught me a degree of cynicism.

Ok....your turn now guys, come on, join in! ;o)

5. Let each random person know they have been tagged by leaving a comment on their website.
6. Let your tagger know when your entry is up

Ok...here we go, my six bits of info you just can't live without knowing! ;o)

1. I am obsessed with handbags.

2. I don't much like wearing clothes.....if God (ok, so I'm atheist but you know where I'm coming from on this) had intended us to wear clothes he would have made them fit!

3. I love any medical TV programme, the more detailed the better, strange considering I hate the sight of blood in real life.

4. I have to use a 10x magnification mirror to pluck my eyebrows these days! :o/

5. I have one big secret! Nope, I'm not gonna tell you.

6. I'm short enough that I can lay completely flat in the bath....and float!

Just one memory

I got this little game from Karen's blog.

The rules are simple;

1. As a comment on this post, leave one memory that you and I had together. It doesn't matter if you know me a little or a lot, anything you remember! And if we've never met in real life, leave me a comment of your favorite post I wrote and why it was your favorite.

2.
Next, re-post these instructions on your blog and see how many people leave a memory about you. It's actually quite funny to see the responses. If you leave a memory about me, I'll assume you're playing the game and I'll come to your blog and leave one about you.

Twenty happy things

Inspired by Lisa who is trying to start a trend! All you have to do is think of twenty happy things in your life...it's a good exercise in positivity!

In no particular order....

1. I slept straight through for the last three nights! This might not be too astounding but it's the first time in five months.

2. I have 'outlaws' who I would choose as friends. One of the few positive things about my marital/divorce history is that I got to ditch the bad ones along with the husbands!

3. The sound of swans taking off and landing on the river.

4. However much I still miss Tilly I know she is very happy where she is.

5. I think I am winning a personal battle with a long standing difficulty.

6. I love and am loved.

7. TP continues to do marvellously.

8. 'Hammy' is learning that I am not scary.

9. I don't own a house... I never thought that would be a good thing but in the current political/financial climate I consider it a very good thing!

10. Losing almost all of anything I ever owned has taught me just how unimportant 'things' actually are.

11. Being broke makes even the tiny treats such a pleasure.

12. I have two baby blue tits on my bird feeder :o)

13. The sun is shining.

14. The man I love is also the person I respect most in the world. Don't assume the two always go together!

15. I have a Costa within two minutes walking distance!

16. I can eat any amount of chocolate without putting on weight.

17. Living on a river bank is fab. (unless you try to get home insurance!)

18. I was gifted a beautiful seriously pink orchid at the weekend.

19. I have a roof over my head and food in my tummy.

20. I get cuddles every day.

I'm not going to tag anyone...if you wanna do it, do it.

I should, I wish, I love

Stolen from Jay....hey, I have limited ability to think right now, a meme is the best I can do! ....and I'm gonna be mean and tag: Lisa, Belleek, Shambles Manor and Mr Nighttime. ;o)

My ex… boyfriend, a twoc'er, went to prison, I was 16, I spent alternate weekends travelling miles to visit and stuck by him (as you do at that tender and naive age, you even think it's kinda romantic FFS!) much to my parents concern and dismay. He did his 18 months (really, they actually used to bang 'em up in those days), he came out....and ran off with someone else!

Maybe I should… try to give up smoking.

I love… my family, Fletch, Lisa, Tilly, anything with four legs, dark chocolate, green olives, motorbikes, travelling, kindness, sensitivity, cuddles, Grossglockner and internet connections that work.

People would say… I’m a little deranged?

I don’t understand… bigots, man's inhumanity to man, international politics, world finance...the list is endless.

When I wake up in the morning… I need coffee!

I lost… my virginity too young....but of course I didn't think so at the time!

Life is full of… stuff! Some good, some bad but most just stuff.

My past is… er, slightly odd.

I get annoyed when… I don't understand something.

Parties are… not my thing.

I wish… for small achievable things.

Dogs… are cool.

Cats… are cooler!

Tomorrow… my dream might come true.

I have low tolerance… for stupidity.

If I had a million dollars… I would get myself and Fletch on Eloisa and hit the world for a few years.

I’m totally terrified of… do we have all day?...and of course spiders!
