Company bosses seem to have taken exception to the recent TV commercial from the makers of cold remedy's Benylin, so much so that it has been referred to the advertising standards authority! And what is the problem? Apparently they don't approve of the fact that the advertisement promotes the
These I assume are the same bosses that have their staff jumping through hoops when they call in sick, who treat their employees like they perpetually lie and aren't ever actually ill, those who terrorise and threaten what should be their most precious resource into working despite even obvious ill health and who ostracise those individuals when they return to their desks. That is what is really outrageous Mr. Alambritis!
I'm not advocating here the taking of a true 'sickie'...that is a day off for fun under the pretence of illness, and I am not stupid enough to think that doesn't cost employers dearly, but what I do advocate is that if one is ill then time off is appropriate and that we minions shouldn't be treated worse than criminals for our human failings!
I for one have had some pretty appalling responses to a day off sick in my time, even more worryingly have allowed myself to become quite seriously ill as a result of my reticence to face the wrath of the boss should I call in sick and more worryingly still, having worked at both management and 'low end' levels it is apparent that trust from employers diminishes rapidly the further down the hierarchical ladder you get!
So....'GO BENYLIN' is my feeling, a little bit of support for the underdog is never a bad thing....even if it is in the name of advertising!

I had an interesting year last year with numerous chest infections following the flu last Jan. It finally cleared up in April when we had some warmer weather but apparently I broke a limit on sick leave in a short period of time, never mind the doctors notes etc. So I had to have a chat to the HR guy + my line manager. The HR guy (bitch) tried to make me feel guilty that taking time off sick put more pressures on the rest of the team, which I saw as bullying, luckily my line manager was much more supportive towards me.
Now frankly, if I have a bug everyone can share it rather than have to go through that process again.
This is said with some bitterness, as it all seemed very unecessary and I felt as though it was being put to me that I was taking a sick day when I could have worked.
So good luck to all those taking benylin days, hope it doesn't lead to accusations of skiving off with a limited excuse.
ps - thanks for my questions, hope I did good on my answers.
I never understand why some bosses have this attitude... I think my previous line manager had a good view: It's better to have a few days off and get over whatever it is than make yourself worse and need even more time off. And also, don't come in if you're ill and make everyone else in the office sick too!
I am a freelance bill by the day MMmmm Colds / Flu / Sickness does not effect me !!!
If I was permie I wouldn't be here now (I would be sick) but there again I don't think a manager would know how to deal with me anyway he he

2.4 million last Monday.
we gunna try and double that and make the last monday of every jan a bank holiday!!!
Didn't hopsitals come about to gather all the sick people together.. and quarantine them.... so a sick day is the opposite right... quarantine yourself from all the daily grinders... it's a simple concept, and yet so misunderstood!
I have been through the same thing as Sage and that was when I took a couple of weeks off work after suffering a miscarriage. They made me feel so distressed and threatened by it all that I too became more ill.
The necessary operation I had in September caused me to have 8 weeks off work (I took the minimum - should have been 3 months) but of course now I have gone over the 'allowed limit' and if I have any further time off before Nov 09 I will be hauled through the first level sickness disciplinary again. On my first day back at work after the op I came down with flu - the real thing and worked for 3 weeks with it. Everyone in the office has now had it and all of them have taken a minimum of 2 weeks off. Just goes to show you ...
For the last 25 years, i have always always gone by the motto...go to work when you are sick, and take sickies when you are well and can enjoy them!!
Works for me :o)
I thinkit's abominable that bosses have this attitude. When I worked, I took time off if I was sick and needed it, but I didn't abuse the system. I guess I was lucky to work for people who were happy with that and didn't give me a hard time.
These days, everyone seems to be encouraged to go to work no matter what, and I think it's incredibly selfish. I have very limited options when it comes to medication, being allergic to so many. I'm also asthmatic, so when I do catch something I have a hard time with it, with no help from OTC meds. My mother - along with countless others - is worse off. She has a compromised immune system, because she's on a chemo drug for her arthritis. The policy of 'tough it out and get your arses into work' is a serious threat to such people.
And I'm convinced there is more sickness about these days, as a direct result.
